Professional Quality, Full HD Video 960p, and 720p in 30 and 60 fps (720p). The HD HERO line of cameras offers three different HD resolutions and one standard resolution, giving you four video resolutions to capture the best angles for any given activity.
They have also increased the quality of the still images. While still a 5mp still camera, the file size has increase with less compression giving a cleaner image. Here's some actual screenshots from HD Hero VIDEO footage (shrunk down to 600 pixels wide):

SD Cards: Welcome to the confusing world of SD Cards. SDHC, mb/s, microSD, miniSD, ultra, extreme, GBs, class rating, speed rating! It's all so confusing. A great place to find detailed explaination is in Wikipedia. We'll explain some of what you need to know for this camera below. If a card is 8GB or larger, it AUTOMATICALLY is an SDHC card (secure digital high capacity). SDHC currently goes up to 32GB. 32GB are only now coming out and are expensive so we recommend a 16GB card which will give you plenty of storage space for the HD Hero. MINIMUM speed for this camera is a class 4 which equals 4MB/s (equal to a 26x speed rating card). Ideally, you want the fastest class card you can afford which currently is a class 6 (6MB/s or 40x speed rating). It will turn on faster, save faster, transfer faster to your computer. If you have a card in the camera and the camera shuts down after a few minutes, that usually means the card isn't fast enough and can't store the data fast enough. DO NOT use a microSD adapter. It will cause problems. The current version 1 HD Hero camera appears to be picky about the SD Cards it uses. GoPro has determined that Kingston 16GB class 4 or higher and Patriot 16GB class 4 or higher are the best choices. |

Minimum Focus: We've done a preliminary minimum focus test and it appears it's somewhere around 12". We've also discovered that if you put simple reading glasses in front of the lens it will focus closer. Glasses must be 2.50 or more to make a difference. Official test will come in the near future. |

Removing wide-angle distortion: There is a free program that does a good job of removing some or all of the distortion caused by the Hero wide-angle lens. It's called GLM Undistorter. Photoshop users: It IS possible to reduce or even eliminate the wide-angle distortion in Photoshop by using a filter in CS2, CS3 and CS4. It's: filter/distort/lens correction. Below are a few extreme examples. It seems to give you wide format for free! Here's a PDF for Photoshop users on how to use this filter effectively.

Software: MP4Cam2AVI is a free program that will convert an mp4 file to AVI file if you have an editing program that does not support MP4 (with H.264 compression CODEC). This would include be most lower-end editing programs. More information on the MP4cam2AVI program. A more robust video conversion program is called MPEG Streamclip. Don't let the name fool you. It converts anything to anything (Mac and PC). AND IT'S FREE. If it says you need Quicktime Alternative, you can find it here. An added benefit for this converter is you can designate a new start and end point for the rendered file, getting rid of dead spots at the beginning and end of your camera video. Video Player: Will play back ANY KIND of video file is VIDEOLAN, and it's FREE! (PC and Mac) CODEC Pack: K-lite. This may enable your computer to play/edit with MP4 files if it doesn' t already.
